First-round wins for Meadows, Wheeling, Maine West

Rolling Meadows' boys basketball team held Wauconda to 7 first-quarter points, then pulled away from the Bulldogs with a 20-point fourth quarter in claiming a Class 4A regional victory on Monday at Prospect.

The Mustangs (15-13) advance to a 7 p.m. Tuesday regional semifinal matchup against Prospect (22-5).

In the other game at Prospect on Monday, No. 11 seed Lake Park topped Elk Grove 61-43. The Lancers will face No. 6 seed Buffalo Grove at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Wheeling 60, Dundee-Crown 36: Johnny Kappel and Deshon Jacobs both made three 3s and scored 15 points to power the 14th-seeded Wildcats to a first-round regional victory over the 20th-seeded Chargers at Lake Zurich.

Wheeling next faces No. 4 seed Lake Zurich at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Maine West 70, Glenbrook South 47: The 11th-seeded Warriors cruised past their first-round foe and earned a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday matchup on their home court against No. 6 seed Waukegan.

In the other game Monday at Maine West, Lake Forest topped Mather 59-52.

Leyden 43, Lane 41: Jake Fiala's 3 at the buzzer lifted the 20th-seeded Eagles past Lane Tech and into a 6:30 p.m. Wednesday matchup against No. 3 seed Kenwood at Proviso West.

Leyden was led in scoring by Jose Alvarado (14 points) and Ocean Johnson (13).
