Hersey hits No. 99 wins for senior group

With a 55-34 win over Wauconda on Wednesday night, Hersey seniors Claire Gritt and Kelly Weyhrich have a chance to reach 100 career wins on Friday night.

That's when the top-seeded Huskies (25-3) will face No. 8 Lake Zurich (12-16) for the championship of the Wauconda Class 4A regional girls basketball championship.

Gritt collected 19 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals in Wednesday's semifinal win over the No. 16 Bulldogs (14-14).

Gritt's 3 steals gave her the all-time school record (now 278), breaking the former mark of 277 set by Chris Wolff in 1996.

Weyhrich, who recently broke Wolff's record for career assists, had 9 on Wednesday along with a 3-point basket.

Hersey senior Gina Miklasz tossed home 14 points while classmate Carly Cooper had 6 and junior Erin McGrath 5.

In all, the Huskies made seven 3-pointers - 4 from Gritt and 1 apiece from Maesyn Benjamin, Weyhrich and Miklasz.

No senior basketball class at Hersey, boys or girls, has won 100 games.
