Krutwig injures ankle in Jacobs' win over Cary-Grove

The Jacobs boys basketball machine certainly flies on more than one engine.

Loyola-bound senior center Cam Krutwig, who is a four-year starter, is certainly the main cog.

But the Golden Eagles possess more useful cylinders.

Playing the final 10 minutes and 18 seconds without Krutwig due to an ankle injury, the Golden Eagles blitzed Cary-Grove with a 22-5 run to end the game and posted a 53-32 win in Fox Valley Conference action Tuesday night.

Krutwig's status is unknown for Friday night's FVC showdown at Prairie Ridge.

The Eagles move to 23-1 overall and 12-1 in conference action.

'We haven't faced a lot of adversity this season," said Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts. "We haven't had a lot of injuries and haven't played in a lot of close games. Cam is our best player and we certainly don't want to play without him The guys showed a lot of character and I am excited a lot of guys stepped up and played well in Cam's absence. I liked our fight."

Up by 4, 31-27, when Krutwig left the game, Jacobs scored the final 5 points of the quarter courtesy of a 3-pointer by Ryan Phillips and a putback by little used sub Daniel Murray. The Golden Eagles led 36-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

"Jacobs' 5-0 run at the end of the third quarter was key," said Cary-Grove coach Adam McCloud. "They had the momentum going into the fourth quarter. Cam is a great player, but they have a lot of very good players. They have the best team in the area and the conference."

Danny Clarke ignited the Trojans to start the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to cut the Golden Eagles' lead to 36-30. That would be as close as Cary-Grove would get.

The Eagles, who made 10-of-27 shots from 3-point range for 37 percent, responded with an 11-0 run spearheaded by 3-pointers from Cooper Schwartz, Kam Mack and Phillips and led 47-30 with 3:09 left in the contest.

Phillips, with 4 treys, paced the Eagles with 19 points.

"I got the team together when Cam went down and told them we have a good team and we wanted to step up," said Phillips. "Obviously, Cam is our leader and we miss him. But all our guys stepped up and we played well to end the game."

Schwartz added 11 points with 3 treys for the winners.

Zach Beaugureau scored 19 with four 3s for the Trojans (13-10, 8-6).

"Zach is a special kid and is certainly one of the top six players in the conference," said McCloud. "He made some tough contested shots and kept us in the game."
