Prospect's comeback falls short

Prospect's fourth-quarter rally fell short to visiting Glenbrook South on Wednesday night at the Jean Walker Field House in Mt. Prospect.

Glenbrook South held off the Knights 52-46 in the nonconference girls basketball game.

The visitors were led by Denver-bound Carrie Weinman's game-high 28 points as Titans Hall of Fame coach Steve Weissenstein returned to his alma mater.

Sophomore Mandy Withey led the Knights with 16 points and 16 rebounds, of which seven were on the offensive glass.

"Mandy was an explosive, impacting player tonight," said Knights coach Gabrielle Lovin, whose team is 10-13 heading into Friday's game at Wheeling.

Wednesday's game was tied 20-20 at half before the Titans took a 36-26 lead after three quarters.

Lovin was proud of her team's comeback as it outscored South 20-16 in the final eight minutes.

"What a game," she said. "Our third quarter was the difference. We weren't playing within our offense and made some silly turnovers. But to bounce back with 20 points in the fourth and have to foul at the end to stop the clock was something I am very proud of."

Juniors Emily Frasco (12 points) and Sara Biesterfeldt (10 points) each had a pair of 3-pointers for the Knights while Margherite Pettenuzzo pulled down 4 rebounds and Stephanie Kowalczyk had 3 boards and 2 steals.

"We pushed ourselves tonight," Lovin said. "We had fire and fight in our bellies and hearts. Glenbrook South will be ranked high in our sectional and this showed we can keep with some strong teams."
