IC Catholic Prep kicks offense into gear

IC Catholic Prep's offense was in rare form Tuesday night in Elmhurst. That was bad news for Fenton.

After a first quarter in which the teams traded long runs, IC Catholic pulled away in the second quarter for a 51-32 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division girls basketball victory.

"For the first time probably all year our offense looked pretty good," ICCP coach Kelsey James said. "We were able to execute our plays and find the open people. "Their confidence is building. It's getting toward the end of the year, they're starting to see the openings, they're starting to practice those quick hits a little bit more. All those repetitions are finally paying off."

"I definitely think we ran all of our quick hits really well and we got everyone in," added Knights senior Katie Hendricks. "We were able to do everything we worked really hard on in practice. We succeeded in that."

The Knights (12-12, 4-7) scored the game's first 5 points, but Fenton (2-21, 0-13) responded with the next 9.

"I liked it," Fenton coach Tim Anderson said of that run. "Sustaining things is an issue."

IC Catholic answered with a 12-0 run to take the lead for good. After the first quarter the Knights were ahead 17-12.

"It always takes us a little while to settle down, but when we do, it looks good," James said.

"Our coach even said, Sometimes you're not here today," Hendricks added. "Hearing that from your coach, we're like, Oh, shoot, we have to pick it up. So I definitely think that once we heard that we realized that we have to step up our game. This is a great conference win. Our season's coming to an end, so we're starting to communicate a lot more and trust each other as a team."

Junior Claire Gibler led the Knights with 17 points, and guard Jaida Smith added 14.

"She's come a long way since she's only a sophomore, but when we can get her going she's really effective," James said.

Hendricks added 8 points.

Krysta Wilson led the Bison with 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers.

"This was a good gym for her last year," Anderson said. "We kind of put the idea in her head. She made five 3s last year. We're trying to give her the opportunity to do it again tonight. She's a senior, we'd like to see her do it again."
