Lakes finishes well, tops Vernon Hills

Lakes' girls basketball team outscored Vernon Hills 13-7 in the fourth quarter to earn a come-from-behind 41-37 victory in nonconference play Monday.

Natalie Iacopetti and Shannon Hurlbut had 8 points apiece to lead the Eagles, and Hurlbut also came up with 5 steals. Sarah Smith finished with 6 points and team bests of 4 rebounds and 4 assists for the Eagles (14-11).

Kayla Caudle (12 points, 20 rebounds) and Katie Burrows (7 points, 5 rebounds) led the effort for Vernon Hills (11-11).

Lakes coach Brian Phelan credited his team's ability to hit free throws down the stretch, while Vernon Hills coach Paul Brettner saw room for improvement in his own team's ability to play well under end-game pressure.

"We fought back in the last couple minutes, but couldn't execute when we were down 2," Brettner said. "Hopefully we learn from this and move on."
