After shooting 33 percent and 19 percent against Antioch and Lake Forest, respectively on Saturday at the Lake Forest MLK tournament, Buffalo Grove coach Steve Kolodziej submitted a request.

"We challenged our seniors to step up and respond," he said. "And that's exactly what they did."

The Bison (10-12) went out and won two games -- 56-33 over Lake Forest and 54-22 over Deerfield -- with seniors Georgette Topalis and Megan Gamber each playing big roles.

Topalis netted a career-high 27 points with five 3-pointers, 7 rebounds and 6 steals against Lake Forest and came back with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals against Deerfield.

Gamber struck for 9 points in the first game, then came back and went 5-for-5 from the 3-point range in the first 12 minutes against Deerfield to finish with 15 points.

"It was a great day for our seniors and their leadership to show up," Kolodziej said.

DeKalb Tournament: Senior Grace Tworek was named to the all-tourney team as Fremd (18-5) took third place with a 66-57 triumph over Rockford Lutheran.

The Vikings dropped a 42-41 decision to Rockford Boylan in the semifinals.

Class 4A No. 2 Rock Island topped No. 6 Rockford Boylan 70-60 for the title.

Tworek led the Vikings against Rockford Boylan with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocked shots followed by Emily Klaczek (11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists) and Colleen Kennedy (6).

Tworek came back with a career-high 32 points in the third-place game. She had three 3-pointers and made 11 of 13 free throws.

Kennedy had 13 points (three 3-pointers) while Midori Williams also reached double figures with 12 points.

Jacobs 48, Elk Grove 37: Freshman Megan Murray led the host Grenadiers (3-17) with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Senior Jenny Banak and junior Zoe Blomquist each scored 7 points and had a 3-pointer in the nonconference game.
