Mundelein wins twice, claims tourney title

Mundelein's girls basketball team picked up two more wins Monday at Kewanee National Guard Armory to capture the MLK tournament championship.

Before the Mustangs beat Geneseo 46-38 to complete a 4-0 showing, they upset host Kewanee 48-44, as freshman Morgan Frank scored 12 points, including a clutch 3-pointer down the stretch.

Kewanee is ranked No. 8 in the state in Class 2A.

Frank hit a 3-pointer to put the Mustangs up 42-40 with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter. She also hit a 3 to pull her team within 25-22 at halftime. Kendall Wald and Hannah Buscher each scored 11 points for Mundelein.

Buffalo Grove 56, Lakes 33: At Lake Forest, Sara Smith scored 10 points for the Eagles in their first of two games on the day.

Lakes 63, Lake Forest 59: Lakes began with a 10-0 run and finished with a win over host Lake Forest.

Sarah Zellman led three players in double-figures for Lakes with 13 points. She also had 5 rebounds.

Sara Smith added 12 points and Natalie Iacopetti had 10 points and 7 assists.

"I was very pleased with our scoring distribution," Lakes coach Brian Phelan said. "We shared the ball and finished the game with solid decisions.

Lakes is now 11-11 on the season.

Antioch 47, Deerfield 26: At Lake Forest, defense carried the Sequoits in their first game of the day at Lake Forest, as Antioch held Deerfield to 2 first-quarter points and just 10 for the first half.

Amy Reiser scored a game-high 14 points and led a 13-for-17 team effort at the foul line with a 4-for-4 contribution. Reiser also blocked 2 shots.

Other key contributors for Antioch included Ashley Reiser (6 points, 5 assists, 2 steals), Erika Gallimore (10 points) and Taylor Feltner (5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals).
