Hampshire falls to Genoa-Kingston

Hampshire's boys basketball team played well in spurts, but Genoa-Kingston's spurts were longer and more frequent. Thus, the Cogs came away with a 70-57 win in the first game of the Central MLK Classic at Burlington Central Friday night.

Trey Powell scored 18 points for Hampshire in the back-and-forth battle. Genoa's Zach Miller led all scorers with 22 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line.

The first half was a roller-coaster as the teams traded runs. The Cogs raced ahead early, leading 12-4, but Hampshire closed out the first quarter on an 11-0 run. G-K answered with the first 8 points of the second quarter to go up 20-15.

The Whip-Purs got even at 27-all on a 3-pointer by Kevin Michaelson. But the Cogs got 3-pointers from Justin McNeal on back-to-back possessions to go ahead for good.

Genoa led by as many as 15 in the second half, but the Whips refused to quit. They got within 55-51 on a 3 by Powell. However, conventional 3-point plays by Michael Trzynka and McNeal on consecutive possessions restored the Cogs' double-digit lead.

"These kids don't quit," said Hampshire coach Ben Whitehouse. "They're fun to be around, they compete. It's a matter of wanting to be physical the whole time versus taking a play off here and there. You take a couple off against a quality team with 10-plus wins, it's a little difficult."

Nathan Cork and Nathan Gomez each added 10 points for Hampshire (3-11). Gomez also ripped down 9 rebounds, as the Whips held a 28-24 advantage on the boards. Bill Dumoulin had 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists for the Whip-Purs.

McNeal finished with 16 points, Justin Peters added 13, and Trzynka finished with 10 for Genoa, which turned the ball over only 11 times while playing at a fast tempo until the closing minutes.

Hampshire actually had one more field goal than the Cogs - 19 to 18 - but Genoa went 29-for-38 from the free-throw line.
