Bair, Glenbard South slip past Timothy Christian

Whenever Glenbard South appeared poised to pull away on Friday night, Timothy Christian had an answer.

But in the end, even the Trojans couldn't find an answer for Charlie Bair.

The Glenbard South senior poured in a game-high 24 points to lead the Raiders to a 56-53 boys basketball win in the Metro Suburban Conference crossover matchup in Elmhurst.

The center added 13 rebounds and 2 steals.

"That is Charlie," Glenbard South coach Wade Hardtke said. "He is a kid that works hard. There are not many things, in terms of everything he does, that he will get outworked in."

Brandon Whiteside added 11 points and Peter Jeske finished with 10 for the visitors, who improved to 8-8 on the winter.

"We executed really well tonight," Bair said. "It was a great team effort. Everybody stepped up. We only

had 6 turnovers, that's amazing. Everybody did their job."

Indeed, Glenbard South gave the ball away just twice in the opening two quarters as the Raiders took a 31-24 lead into halftime. Bair led the way with 13 points despite missing the final five minutes with two fouls. Over that span the visitors increased their advantage from 3 to 7.

The margin swelled to as many as 10 in the third before Timothy Christian (10-5) fought back. A 3-pointer by Joey Davidson, who led the Trojans with 17 points, pulled the home team within 3. In the fourth they got as close as 46-44 on another basket by Davidson. The deficit was still 3 on two occasions in the final minute, but Timothy's last attempt to tie the score was blocked at the buzzer.

"The kids battled back," Timothy coach Jack LeGrand said. "We were a little rusty from a layoff, our last game was on Dec. 31. But that's not an excuse. They did a good job, their big guy did a good job. Every time we clawed our way back, they had an answer for us. We just needed key defensive stops, but they came up with big buckets."

Jonny Strube and Brandon Orange had 12 points apiece for the Trojans.

Raiders sophomore point guard Kevin Enright also contributed 7 points in the victory.

"He has been our unsung hero," Hardtke said. "We've been under 10 turnovers almost every game this year. That was a good win for us, that's a tough place to play. And Jack always has his guys ready."
