Stevenson's Brunson notches Big East award

Jalen Brunson, who earned so many honors during his well-documented basketball career at Stevenson High School, continues to do so on the collegiate level.

The Villanova sophomore was recently honored as the Big East Player of the Week.

Brunson averaged 20 points, 5.5 assists and 4 rebounds, while guiding the Wildcats to a pair of wins.

In an 80-70 victory at No. 10 Creighton, the sophomore scored a career-high 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, which included 5-of-7 from 3-point range. He added 5 assists and 4 rebounds.

Brunson posted 13 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds in a 68-65 win over DePaul.

• Carthage College junior Brad Kruse (Lake Zurich) had 8 points as the Red Men overcame a second-half comeback to win their fifth straight game, 75-67, over Elmhurst.

The win moves Carthage to 4-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin for the first time since the 2013-14 season and 10-3 overall.

Kruse also led the Red Men with 10 rebounds and 9 assists as he came close to an elusive triple-double.

On the defensive side, Kruse led the lockdown defense that forced five turnovers and held Elmhurst to 2-of-10 from the field. Kruse recorded 2 blocks over the run.

Carthage junior guard Derek Mason (Warren) chipped in a 3-pointer and a steal in his 10 minutes.

"Derek Mason had a huge 3," said Carthage coach Bosko Djurickovic on the school's website. " Those are big-time things that make the difference in a very close basketball game."

• Carthage assistant coach Steve Djurickovic credited Kruse with helping the Red Men post an 82-76 victory over No. 10-ranked North Park.

"Brad Kruse's defense in the second half was outstanding and made their guys work very hard for every shot," Djurickovic said in the game story on the school website. "North Park is a great team that is very difficult to matchup with but our guys stuck with the game plan and came out with a huge conference road win to finish a stretch of six very tough road games."

Women's swimming

Carthage junior Mack Ryan (Libertyville) won the 200 fly (222.75) when the Lady Reds cruised to a convincing 205-77 win over CCIW rival Augustana.
