Wheeling reaches high for win at Meadows

Wheeling's boys basketball team went to extra heights for Friday night's dramatic 45-43 win at Rolling Meadows.

Deshon Jacobs caught a lob pass from Jalen Dennis and finished above the rim to make the winning basket as time expired in the Mid-Suburban East contest.

"We came out tonight and played great in the first half," said Wheeling coach Mike O'Keeffe. "We played extremely unselfish, we made shots, and our 1-3-1 defense disrupted rhythm and created turnovers.

"However, the second half was a totally different story. Rolling Meadows made some great adjustments on both ends of the floor and really played well. "

The Wildcats were down 42-36 with two minutes left.

T.J. Best made a clutch 3 pointer from the corner and converted 2 free throws to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.

"We drew up a play with fours seconds left, and our kids executed it perfectly," O'Keeffe said about the game-winner. "Michael Best set a great screen, Jalen Dennis made a terrific pass and Deshon Jacobs finished above the rim. It was a great win against a really good Rolling Meadows team."

Best scored 14 points to lead Wheeling (4-4, 1-1). He hit a pair of 3-pointers and went 5-for-6 at the foul line. Jacobs, Dennis and Johnny Kappel each chipped in 7 points for the Wildcats (4-4, 1-1).

Gio Carrillo scored 17 points to lead Meadows (2-5, 1-1), which was without senior forward Jared Murphy.

Palatine 62, Barrington 50: Visiting Palatine (2-5, 1-1) handed Barrington (6-1, 1-1) its first loss in the MSL West contest.

Junior Johnny O'Shea led the Pirates with 21 points while classmate Jake Moertl added 17.

Palatine travels to Maine West on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. nonconference game.

Hersey 64, Elk Grove 44: The host Huskies spread around the scoring nicely in maintaining their lead in the MSL East.

Ken Hasley led the way with 14 points, with strong supporting efforts from Joe Coffaro (12 points, all on 3s), Jake Mailloux (11 points) and Grant Wagner and Chris O'Toole (8 apiece).

Elk Grove got 10 points from both Joey Lopez and Dylan Ingebrigtsen, and Nico Collazo had 8.

Hersey improved to 4-3 and 2-0, while Elk Grove slipped to 0-7.

Mooseheart 56, Christian Liberty 49: Steve Ringstrand had 15 points, Jesse Castro had 14 and Brendan Munoz 11, but the Chargers came up short in Northeastern Athletic Conference action.
