Clausen, Huntley handle Jacobs

While the Huntley offense runs through 6-foot-1 senior forward Morgan Clausen, it runs best when everyone gets involved in the attack.

Clausen racked up a game high 20-points and 13 rebounds, but four other Red Raiders scored during an impressive 18-2 second quarter run that paved the way for their 42-30 Fox Valley Conference home victory over Jacobs Friday night.

"I noticed when I would take it baseline, they would double and sometimes triple team me, so I tried to pass out of the trap and everyone did a great job knocking down the shots and taking drives," Clausen said. "It was a team effort in the second quarter."

"Obviously they were hanging all over Morgan and keying in on her, but she did a nice job of letting the game come to her and getting her teammates involved," said Huntley coach Steve Raethz.

Clausen tallied all 7 of Huntley's first-quarter points and Jacobs briefly grabbed an 8-7 lead on freshman Kyra Cabusao's 3-pointer in the opening minute of the second quarter.

The rest of the half belonged to the Red Raiders (2-3, 1-0) as Mallory Moffett connected on a pair of 3-pointers and a 15-foot jumper, Maddy Moffett hit a trifecta and Katherine Bessey added a basket for a 25-10 halftime advantage.

Huntley threatened to make the game a blowout when 3-pointers from Clausen and Missy Moffett pushed the lead to 19 points, but a determined Jacobs squad fought back.

The Golden Eagles (2-4, 1-1) shot just 3-for-25 from the field in the opening half, but found their offensive rhythm as the game progressed.

Cabusao's transition layup and Nicole Durben's 3-pointer to end the third quarter sparked a 14-2 Jacobs' run. Grace O'Malley and Carly Sidor drained 3-pointers to narrow the gap to 35-28 with 3:25 remaining.

"On the defensive end of the floor we did some nice things, it was just a matter of us trying to find ways to score and we did a better job of that in the second half," said Jacobs coach Joe Benoit.

Clausen stemmed the tide with a putback off a missed Huntley free throw and Kaylee Andrea sealed the win by going 5-for-6 from the line in the final 1:29.

"They did a great job coming back and we knew that we had to press through," Clausen said. "It was a good test to prepare ourselves and get this under our belts."

"Jacobs didn't give in and clawed back, but I like the way our kids responded down the stretch when they got it down to seven points" Raethz said.

Cabusao finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds for Jacobs before fouling out. Sidor added 6 points while Maggie Grady grabbed 9 rebounds.

"I'm proud of the way our kids battled. They don't quit," Benoit said. "At the same time you have to give credit to Huntley. Their pressure really took us out of our stuff."
