Barrington's basic approach wins at Hoffman

Barrington went old school to give host Hoffman Estates a 53-36 lesson Friday.

Barrington went inside all game on Hoffman, scoring 22 of its 23 field goals from the paint as the Broncos (5-0, 1-0) remained unbeaten. That type of game even surprised Barrington coach Bryan Tucker.

"I did not know that," said Tucker of his team's inside scoring prowess. "That stat puts it into perspective.

"I am sure our guys will be disappointed that they didn't make any 3s since that is the new style of the game. We were fortunate to get to the hole."

Conversely, Hoffman Estates (2-3, 0-1) had difficulty getting the ball inside against the much larger front line of Barrington in 6-foot-7 Jackson Perkins, 6-6 Jack Reinhard, 6-3 Bart Susol and 6-3 Jake Parsons, converting just 2 field goals from the paint in the game.

"I always like to play a game like this," said Perkins, who came of the bench to score 12 points and had 5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. "I think our offense runs good through the post. It was a little old school basketball on the gridiron."

Barrington used that type of play to jump to a 14-1 advantage after one quarter.

The Broncos forced Hoffman to miss its first 9 shots. They then added even more defensive pressure as Hoffman turned the ball over 10 times in the second quarter as Barrington led 29-7 at the break.

With Hoffman concentrating on taking the inside game away from Barrington, Broncos guard Anthony Spann found some open room. The junior slashed inside, scoring 6 of his game-high 16 points in the second quarter to help the Broncos extend their lead.

"The offense really got me open and created driving lanes for me," Spann said. "I was able to score and to dish to the open man. Offensively, we are just a good team when we get spacing."

Hoffman finally got their offense rolling by bombing away from outside the arc.

Led by Adrian Punzalan and Rudra Patel, Hoffman nailed six 3s in the third quarter. They also scored the first basket of the final quarter to cut the lead to 41-30 with 5:38 to play.

Back inside went Barrington, producing a 10-3 run to close out the Hawks.

"Our kids did a nice job of finding open guys and moving off the ball," Tucker said. "They made some great passes. They were really unselfish out there. It was fun to watch."

Hofmann Estates coach Luke Yanule was not happy with his team's play.

"I am embarrassed by that start," Yanule said. "They punched us in the face."

Yanule said Barrington's inside game hurt his team.

"The had penetration to the basket, and then rotations happen," Yanule said. "They didn't have to make a 3. We knew that they had dangerous 3-point shooters, but why shoot it when it doesn't matter?"

Reinhard had 8 points for Barrington while Blake Gosswein had 6 points and Parsons and Jason Boock each had 5 points for the Broncos, who outrebounded Hoffman 29-16.

Marshal Davis led the Hawks with 10 points while Patel had 9 and Punzalan 8.
