Jacobs has the hot hand against Huntley

The Jacobs boys basketball team extend its unbeaten streak to 5 games with a 70-32 rout of Huntley Wednesday night in Fox Valley Conference action at Huntley.

The Red Raiders doubled teamed the Golden Eagles' main scoring threat, 6-foot-9 Cameron Krutwig, in the first half. The strategy worked as the senior forward was limited to 4 first half buckets in the FVC opener.

However, the Red Raiders could not get their offense on track, making as a team only one more basket then Krutwig in the first 16 minutes and trailed 29-10 at halftime.

"I thought we actually played pretty good defense in the first half, we just couldn't get the shots," said Huntley coach Will Benson. "We are just in an offensive funk. We have been for a few games."

Jacobs (5-0) countered in the second half by going to its outside game.

The Golden Eagles sank seven 3-pointers in the last two quarters to put the game away.

"We've seen a lot of different things done to Cam, so we've kind of seen about everything that they can throw at us," said Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts. "They had guys hounding him but that left our shooters open and if our guys are making shots, it's going to be tough."

Cooper Schwartz led the attack with 4 treys, all in the third quarter. The senior guard scored a game-high 18 points, all on baskets from beyond the arc. Jacobs led 49-21 at the start of the fourth quarter.

"I guess I just had the hot hand. It was a lot of transition opportunities. We talked before the game about having the confidence to knock them down," Schwartz said. "Because the way they were guarding us, they weren't closing out hard. They didn't have their hands up so we took advantage of that."

"We didn't do a very good job of getting to him," said Benson about Schwartz. "He had some contested shots but like any good shooter, it doesn't matter if it is contested or not".

"Defensively it always the thing for us. As a team we defend really well. It makes it very hard for the other team to score," Roberts said. "And when we are able to knock down some shots like Cooper was doing, it makes it really hard to catch us."

Reserves Adam Kale, Joe Hogle and Alex Collazo each chipped in one 3-pointer for the Golden Eagles.

Krutwig finished the night with 15 points, going a perfect 5 for 5 from the free throw line.

Classmate Mason Materna scored 9 points.

The loss dropped Huntley to 1-4. Stephen Browne tallied 9 points for the Red Raiders.
