Injury-free Sidor sparks Jacobs past Streamwood

Carly Sidor is ecstatic to be on the court playing basketball injury free.

Sidor, who missed most of the 2015-2016 campaign with a torn meniscus, contributed 14 points with 10 rebounds and 3 assists while keying Jacobs' 43-31 win over Streamwood in second round action of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving girls basketball tournament Friday night in Carpentersville.

"It is amazing to be pain free and injury free," said Sidor, a senior and 4-year starter for the Golden Eagles. "I can go out and just play basketball without thinking about it. I accept being a leader on the team and mentoring the younger players. We have great team chemistry with the younger and older players. We have a great desire and passion to win. It was a team win tonight."

Jacobs fifth-year coach Joe Benoit is happy with Sidor's presence on the floor for many reasons.

"She plays so hard and just does everything well at both ends of the court," said Benoit. "Her offensive rebounding was key for us. It is nice to have her leadership back on the floor. "

Jacobs (1-1), which held a narrow 31-29 lead after 3 quarters, outscored Streamwood 12-2 in the fourth quarter to win by 12.

The Golden Eagles seized control of the game by scoring the first 9 points of the fourth quarter.

Kerri Healy scored 7 points including a 3-pointer and Maggie Grady collected a putback as Jacobs led 40-29 with 3:53 left in the game.

Jenejha Williams, who was saddled with foul trouble the entire game, canned a turnaround 12-footer in the lane with 2:33 remaining to make the score 40-31. Those would be the only points the Sabres would score in the final quarter.

A 3-pointer by Grace O' Malley sealed the win for the Eagles with 1:22 left in the contest.

Healy followed Sidor in scoring with 9 points while O'Malley scored 8 with two 3-pointers.

Streamwood, which connected on only 3-of-15 shots in the second half for 20 percent, made only 1-of-20 (5 percent) from 3-point range for the game.

"It is very hard to win when you make only 1-of-20 from 3-point range and shoot free throws as poorly as we did," said Streamwood coach George Rosner, whose team was 8 of 16 from the line. "Our shot selection wasn't good and Jacobs worked harder than us in the fourth quarter."

Williams, who was the lone Sabre in double digits with 10 points, also collected 13 rebounds and blocked 5 shots.
