BG wins opener; Wachal gets 1,000th point

Coming off three straight Class 4A regional titles and a Mid-Suburban East title last winter, Buffalo Grove girls basketball coach Steve Kolodziej had his Bison ready for the start of this season as they topped Grayslake Central 58-51 on Thursday night.

Megan Gamber (17 points), Jackie Bickhaus (14), Alyssa Floro (11) and Macy Floros (9) led the Bison to victory in the first round of their own Bison Classic.

Gamber connected for three 3-pointers. Alyssa Floros had two and Bockhaus one.

"Kendra Lee was huge on the boards for us," Kolodziej said. "Jackie Bickhaus did a great job managing the game.

"Most importantly, Megan Gamber (senior guard) not only led us in scoring but as a floor leader, too. She made sure people were in the right spots, and made sure she was there to help everyone."

Yorkville 54, Conant 33: Senior guard Jorie Wachal registered her 1,000 career point for Conant (1-2) in the third-round game of the York tournament.

Prospect 50, Niles West 47: Trailing 19-5 after one quarter, Prospect (1-2) charged back to win its first game of the York Thanksgiving Tournament.

Emily Frasco scored 11 points with 7 rebounds and Mary McKenna added 9 and 5 rebounds to lead the Knights, who outscored Niles West 32-14 in the middle quarters.

Mandy Withey added 8 points and 13 rebounds for Prospect, which also received 6 points apiece from Margherite Pettenuzzo and Haley Will.

Maggie Determann had 5 rebounds and 2 steals for the Knights.

Rolling Meadows 60, Johnsburg 45: Junior guard Kyra Spiwak scored a game-high 22 points and Katherine Nolan added 10 for the Mustangs who improved to 2-0 in the Lake Zurich Turkey Thriller.

Other top scorers for the Mustangs were Morgan Campagna (8 points), Melissa Spiwak (7) and Lily Greifenstein (7).

"Kyra Spiwak stepped up for us down the stretch," said Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "We received big bench contributions from Melissa Spiwak, Caili Hosler and Lily Greifenstein."

Maine West 43, Lake Park 34: Maine West improved to 3-0 and 2-0 in the Hoffman Estates tournament as Alissa Fallon (14 points), Angela Dugalic (10 points, 6 rebounds) and Rachel Kent (8 points) led the way.

Fallon and Catherine Johnson each had a 3-pointer for the Warriors.

Sycamore 40, Elk Grove 38: Megan Murray (11 points) and Isabel Michniak (6) led Elk Grove (0-2) in its second round game of the Vernon Hills tournament.

Stevenson 54, Schaumburg 43: The Saxons (0-2 in their own tournament) were led by Mallory Gerber's 22 points. Classmate Laura O'Connell added 9.

Wheaton Warrenville South 46, St. Viator 29: St. Viator now stands at 0-2 in the Schaumburg Thanksgiving tournament.
