Girls basketball: Palatine takes opener at Dundee-Crown

Palatine's girls basketball team got off to a winning start in the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving tournament by defeating Downers Grove North 43-36 on Monday night in Carpentersville.

Sophomore guard Elena Porrata led the Pirates with 13 points while Brittany Shapiro added 9. Teammates Reggie Much and Kendra Lindell each added 6 for the Pirates, who led 23-10 at intermission.

Porrata connected for three 3-pointers while Lindell had 2. Kacie Filian and Much had 1 apiece for Palatine, which faces Jacobs on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Trinity 56, Prospect 48: Trinity led 30-26 at half and went on to win the first-round game of the York girls basketball tourney in Elmhurst.

Mandy Withey led the Knights with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 2 steals while Emily Frasco was right behind with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots.

Margherite Pettenuzzo chipped in 7 points and Maggie Determann 6 for Prospect, which swings back into action at 6 p.m. today when it faces the host Dukes.

Vernon Hills 57, Elk Grove 25: Isabel Michniak led Elk Grove with 6 points in the first-round game of the Vernon Hills tourney. Megan Murray, Jenny Banak, Zoe Blomquist and Leilani Rivera all added 4 points for the Grens.
