Boys basketball: Stevenson's Smith commits to Indiana

Stevenson senior forward Justin Smith has given a verbal commitment to play basketball for Indiana University.

The 6-foot-7 Smith announced his decision via Twitter on Monday night:

"I am humbled by the opportunities I was given to play for many great schools. I am honored to have met great coaching staffs and people throughout this process. I am grateful for my teachers, coaches and parents, who have helped me develop as a student athlete. And I am thrilled to announce that I will continue my education and play basketball at Indiana University. #Hoosiers #IU"

Smith chose Indiana over defending national champion Villanova, where his former high school teammate Jalen Brunson plays. He also considered, among other schools, Michigan, Xavier, Stanford and Wisconsin.

A varsity player since his freshman year, Smith was named the captain of the Daily Herald All-Area boys basketball team for Lake County last season after averaging 17 points and 8 rebounds.
