Notre Dame denies Deerfield

Deerfield's boys basketball team had been on a run with 17 straight victories and was looking to reach the supersectional for the first time since 1997.

Maybe it was déjà vu in some measure, because the Warriors played Notre Dame that year in the supersectional and lost 40-33, missing their shot at a Class AA Elite Eight appearance.

It was more of the same Friday night, as third-seeded Notre Dame ran away from No. 2 Deerfield 69-48 to take the Class 4A Glenbrook South sectional.

Notre Dame (25-6) moves on to face Chicago Curie in the Northwestern supersectional at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Evanston.

Anthony D'Avanzo led Notre Dame with 13 points, while Lucas Simon and Jemeril Wilson each added 10 points.

The Dons led 20-13 by the end of the first quarter and used a 21-5 run to take a 41-18 advantage into halftime.

"(Deerfield) attacked us and trapped us," Notre Dame coach Tom Les said. "We, in turn, attacked them back and got high-percentage shots. We had a good lead at halftime, but we knew that this game was far from over with their capabilities."

Deerfield (28-4) was led by University of Chicago-bound Jordan Baum with 18 points. Jeremy Sernick added 13.
