Boys basketball: Northwest all-area team

Patrick Benka FremdThe 6-foot-8 Benka has been a force for the Vikings for the past three years, playing all five spots on the floor at various times. He is the leading scorer for Fremd this season, averaging 12.5 points per game, and is the team's second-leading rebounder. "He is a very versatile athlete that has played all over the court for us," Fremd coach Bob Widlowksi said. "He creates a difficult matchup for our opponents with his size and skill."

TJ Best WheelingBest has been just that for the Wildcats this season. The junior is averaging 10 points per game to lead his team while also contributing 3 rebounds and 3 assists per game. He also led his team in 3-point field goals. "TJ is a gym rat who loves the game of basketball and is constantly working on his game," Wheeling coach Michael O'Keeffe said. "He is one of the best shooters in the area, but more importantly, he is hard-working, coachable, and a terrific young man. It has been fun seeing him grow as a player."

Joe Coffaro HerseyCoffaro has been the key to Hersey's defense this year. The junior, who was all-area last year as a sophomore, has 50 steals this season while leading the Huskies in points (14.6) and assists (4.1) while shooting 35 percent from outside the arc. He also averages 3 rebounds per game. "Joe is an explosive and aggressive basketball player," Hersey coach Steve Messer said. "He also starts our defense by smothering opponents, with very few fouls."

Ryan Davis ConantDavis has come into his own this season after contributing on the varsity as a freshman. The 6-foot-8 sophomore averaged 11 points, led the team with 8 rebounds per game and had 2.3 assists per game for the MSL champs. Davis scored in double figures 12 times for the Cougars. "He is a real presence in the post and has a nice touch on the perimeter and the free throw line," Conant coach Tom McCormack said. "He has tremendous hands, vision, and anticipation as well."

Michael Downing ConantDowning, who transferred in from St. Joseph this year, has stepped in quite nicely to the Cougars' lineup. He has made huge contributions and filled a void when Kyle Bradley went down with a season-ending injury. A tremendous shot-blocker averaging nearly 3 per game, Downing has also averaged 7 points and 5 rebounds. "Mike's biggest asset is his presence around the rim," Conant coach Tom McCormack said. "He is a real defensive presence that adds a whole different dimension to our defense and the way teams have to attack us. His length and mobility are big weapons."

Joey Gatziolis Elk GroveThe MSL East player of the year, Gatziolis was also all-area last year and named to the football all-area team in the fall. Gatziolis averaged 14 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 57 percent from the field. He also had 76 assists and 59 steals. "Joey has had a season filled with being efficient and consistent," Elk Grove coach Anthony Furman said. "He has led this team and taken on all challenges along the way. He has defended all positions and made key plays in almost every game we have played."

Brandon Hall Hoffman EstatesHall has been a key contributor to the Hawks for the past two seasons. With his 6-foot-6 frame and long wingspan, Hall averaged 8 rebounds and 12.8 points. He also played football, where he was a wide receiver. "We have the utmost respect for Brandon achieving what he has this year considering he's a two-sport athlete and also had a very successful football season," Hoffman Estates coach Luke Yanule said. "It really speaks to his work ethic and commitment on how well he's played in both sports."

Frankie Mack ProspectMack has grown into one of the area's top competitors. Playing on the varsity team since he was a freshman, Mack has already been named all-conference in the MSL the last two seasons. He averaged 15.7 points, shooting 40 percent from outside the arc. "Frankie set a positive tone early on in the season for our team and it carried us throughout the year," Prospect coach John Camardella said. "He has become a very good decision-maker in the absence of some other players and gets us into our actions."

Will Reinhard BarringtonThe 6-foot-6 Reinhard has been a huge contributor for the Broncos for three seasons. He led the team with 13.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He also was the team leader in blocked shots and was a member of the MSL all-academic team. "Will is a threat both inside and out, scoring in the low post as well as at the arc," Barrington coach Bryan Tucker said. "His physical presence is a factor every night. Will leads by example, never missing a practice and giving 100 percent at all times."

Kyle Sliwa FremdSliwa has been a fixture at the guard spot for the Vikings the past two seasons and has played a key role in their many successes. "One of the most dynamic big men in the area," Prospect coach John Camardella said. "He led our team in rebounding and assists and really opens up the floor for our team.
