Jacobs closes out another undefeated FVC season

A 7-0 run in the last one minute and 23 seconds in regulation to send the game into overtime wasn't needed this time.

On Jan. 22, Jacobs sweated out a 52-50 overtime win over Cary-Grove in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action in Algonquin.

Actually, there was little drama on Saturday night as Jacobs claimed its second straight Valley Division title without a loss cruising to a 60-40 win over Cary-Grove in Cary.

It was the Golden Eagles' 21st straight division victory.

"We talked about winning tonight and winning the conference for a second straight year undefeated," said Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts. "These kids can be proud of this feat and accomplishment."

Cary-Grove (6-19, 3-7) couldn't contain Jacobs junior center Cam Krutwig. Krutwig, who made all 8 of his shots in the first half including a 3-pointer, scored 18 points as Jacobs (20-5, 10-0) led 28-13 at halftime. Krutwig, who ended the night connecting on 14-of-16 shots from the floor, tallied 32 points with 18 rebounds and 5 assists. Out of Krutwig's 14 baskets, there were 12 assists.

"It is a huge accomplishment to win conference two years in a row undefeated," said Krutwig. "It was a point of emphasis all season long. The guys did a great job of getting me the ball in great position to score."

Down 15 at intermission, the Trojans got to within 8, 35-27, on a layup from Quinn Celske with 3:28 remaining in the third quarter.

The Trojans couldn't get any closer.

Jacobs' biggest lead of the game was 58-36 after a putback from Brian Rechtsteiner with a minute left in the contest.

Mason Materna followed Krutwig with 9 points. Senior Tim Randl scored 2 points but had 5 assists with 3 steals and 5 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

"There is a lot of young talent on this team and I thought we could win conference again undefeated," said Randl. "We hit a rough patch a couple of weeks ago but we are playing our best basketball going into the crossover game next week and the regionals the following week."

Cary-Grove coach Ralph Schuetzle was impressed with Krutwig's offensive prowess.

"He is certainly one of the best players in the area," said the Cary-Grove coach. "It's pick your poison with him."

Zach Beaugureau paced the Trojans with 13 points including three 3-pointers while Dan Schmidt added 10, 8 in the second half.
