Batavia breezes by Addison Trail

Batavia may or may not have set a school record with its 25th win Tuesday night, a 65-35 victory over Addison Trail in the Class 4A Batavia regional semifinals.

Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen is researching where his current squad ranks among the school's all-time best. They've already passed up the 2013-14 team that reached the sectional finals, and Jensen thinks they are in the running with some of former coach Mike Mandele's best.

He knows they are going to be a tough out in the postseason if they keep playing defense like they did holding Addison Trail (10-18) to 33 percent shooting (13 of 39) and keep getting the ball to Hannah Frazier, who finished with 31 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 3 seed Batavia (25-5) will play No. 11 Glenbard North for the regional title at 7 p.m. Friday.

"They are good, that's why they are a 3 seed," Addison Trail coach Rob Schader said. "She's (Frazier) good. She's not going to St. Louis for nothing. She has touch around the basket, she can shoot from inside, outside. That was the difference. There was nothing we could do to stop her."

Batavia broke the game open early. After a steal and layup by Maria Koulogeorgas tied the game at 2, Batavia scored the next 16 points for an 18-2 lead.

Frazier (10) and Jess Koch (6) scored all 16 in the run.

"We started the way we needed to start," Jensen said. "We got a 3 early in the first quarter and then basically gave it to Hannah every chance we got and things happen from there. The pace we started with was good for us."

Batavia pushed its lead to 22-8 after one quarter and 42-19 at halftime. Addison Trail committed 18 of its 27 turnovers in the first half.

"Our press we've been working on that and it really showed in this game," Frazier said. "We had total confidence the whole game and that's great for us going into the postseason because that's how we want to play every game."

Jensen pulled Frazier with 1:30 left in the third quarter, Batavia up 60-24. Koch added 9 points and freshman Geddy Rerko 8.

Diamond Pikulyk led Addison Trail with 9 points and 4 rebounds.

"It wasn't a bad year," Schader said. "We have six kids coming back next year, a good core."
