Round Lake exceeds its seed, tops Grayslake North
Round Lake, the No. 21 seed in the Stevenson sectional, sprung a first-round surprise in the Class 4A girls basketball postseason.
Behind 17 points from senior forward Miyah Johnson, the Panthers came up with a 54-50 victory over No. 11 seed Grayslake North on Monday in regional play-in action at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights.
Sidney Lovitsch paced Grayslake North (16-14) with 17 points.
Round Lake (5-23) advances to a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday contest at Hersey against Rolling Meadows.
Lake Forest 70, Waukegan 58: Maeve Summerville scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, as the Scouts handled the Bulldogs in first-round play at Hersey. Lake Forest next meets regional host Hersey at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Grayslake Central 37, Mundelein 26: Fifteenth-seeded Grayslake Central got a game-high 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, from Quin Garbett and overcame a 2-point output in the second quarter to oust No. 18 seed Mundelein in a regional play-in at Lake Zurich.
Ania Barnes and Amanda Larson both finished with 8 points for the Rams.
Junior guard Kendall Wald had 8 points, including two 3s, to lead the Mustangs in scoring.
Grayslake Central advances to meet Buffalo Grove in a 6 p.m. Tuesday tipoff at Lake Zurich. That game will be followed by Lake Zurich vs. Barrington at 7:30 p.m.
