Cary-Grove outlasts Dundee-Crown

For much of the night on Friday the game between Cary-Grove and Dundee-Crown moved at a snails pace, but in the final 6 minutes the Trojans managed to jump into the fast lane and cruised to a 49-37 win in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action.

C-G trailed 35-34 with 5:35 left to play before going on a 15-2 run to close the game. The Trojans' defense forced 7 turnovers in the fourth quarter.

"The game was moving at a pretty slow pace, but our press finally got something going for us," Cary-Grove coach Ralph Schuetzle said. "We had good rotation in the back and good anticipation getting into the passing lanes."

Jimmy Clarke scored in the post to start the game ending run and give the Trojans the lead 36-35. Adam Loch and Danny Schmidt followed with a couple buckets in transition.

'We tried to stay patient all night," Schuetzle said. "The slow pace can make it tough to get in the flow. I thought Jimmy Clarke found a nice mismatch on the basket that gave us the lead and then our defense created a couple opportunities."

The Trojans made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to help seal the win.

C-G also had another nice spurt at the end of the first half when it erased a 14-9 deficit and went on an 11-2 run to go up 20-16.

Zach Beagureau led that run with a 3-pointer and a layup. He finished with a team-high 12 points.

"They were dictating the pace," Beagureau said. "Our press was able to speed the game up and the turnovers kind of changed the game around."

The Chargers shot just 14-of-40 (31 percent) in the game. Khiry Powell gave D-C a spark early in the third quarter when he hit 3-pointers on three consecutive trips down the floor to briefly give the Chargers the lead 25-22.

"We were hoping to be able to score a few more points," D-C coach Lance Huber said. "We don't necessarily set out to slow the game up. We just need to be careful with the basketball when our margin of error is so small. We were able to stay right in it and give ourselves an opportunity until the errors did us in at the end."

Matt Wiechmann had 11 points to lead the Chargers in scoring.
