Fremd, Buffalo Grove complete perfect divisional runs

For the third straight season, Fremd's girls basketball team will head into the Mid-Suburban League championship game with a perfect conference record.

The Vikings completed a 10-0 run through the West on Friday night when they posted a 59-24 triumph at Palatine.

The Vikings (23-2) will host Buffalo Grove (22-4) for the title at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Grace Tworek (11 points), Midori Williams (7), Hayley Williams (6), Brianna Lewis (6), Erina Lenahan (5) and Julia Wacker (5) were among 12 players who got into the scoring column for the MSL West champs.

Palatine (9-17, 1-9) was led by Michala Leber (6 points), Sarah Udoni (5 points, one 3-pointer) and Carissa Multon (5).

Hayley Williams and Tworek each had a pair of 3-pointers for Fremd while teammates Amanda McCartney, Wacker, Midori Williams each had one.

Buffalo Grove 54, Wheeling 35: Senior Maddie Welter scored 20 points while hitting six 3-pointers and Sammy Stejskal connected on three 3-pointers for 19 points as BG (22-4, 10-0) wrapped up its first undefeated conference season since 2007.

The Bison led 15-9 after one quarter but pulled away to a 31-13 lead at half.

Megan Gamber and Georgette Topalis also had 3-pointers BG, which visits Fremd on Wednesday for the MSL title at 7:30 p.m.

Wheeling (12-15, 3-7) was led by Melissa Claver's 16 points and 7 from Michaela Vasey.

Barrington 46, Hoffman Estates 39: The visiting Fillies had a terrific first quarter, outscoring the Hawks 17-6 on their way to a victory in their final MSL West matchup of the season.

Senior forward Megan Talbot, an Illinois State recruit, led the way for Barrington (12-12, 7-3) with 16 points, 13 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots.

Classmate Kelly Katis contributed 12 points, 4 assist and 2 steals.

"I thought it was one of the best games Megan (Talbot) has played all season," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro, whose club finished tied for second in the West with Schaumburg. "She had a major presence at both ends of the floor. I thought she forced Hoffman to miss a lot of shots around the basket because they had to shoot over her hands."

Senior guard Abigail Elo (4-of-4) hit some clutch free throws in the final quarter for the Fillies.

"Claire Collier (junior forward) also had some big minutes for us offensively and defensively off the bench," Barreiro said.

Hoffman Estates junior guard Monraia Wilson reached a scoring milestone early in the third quarter, when she surpassed 1,000 career points on a jump shot.

Wilson went on to lead the Hawks with 15 points and increased her career scoring total to 1,006 by game's end.

"Congratulations to Monraia," Barrerio said "In a long time in this league, I don't remember too many girls reaching 1,000 points as a junior. It's quite an accomplishment."

Erin Hanson had 14 points for the Hawks (10-16, 2-8).

Maine West 57, Glenbrook North 34: Visiting Maine West jumped ahead 15-6 after one quarter and never looked back while clinching at least a tie for its 27th Central Suburban League title under coach Derril Kipp.

Freshman Rachel Kent (11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals), sophomore Catherine Johnson (9 points, 2 steals, 2 assists), senior Jordan Hart (9 points) and Kayla Pociejewski (8 points) were top scorers for West.

Allison Pearson, Monica Liwag, Catherine Johnson and Hart each had 3-pointers for West (19-7, 8-1).

Rolling Meadows 69, Elk Grove 42: Kyra Spiwak (13 points), Megan King (9), Kelsey Nallon (8), Morgan Campagna (8), Melissa Spiwak (7) and Hannah Mickey (7) led visiting Meadows (17-9, 6-4) in the MSL East.

Seniors Alex Masnica (two 3-pointers) and Sarah Pauscher (one 3-pointer) each scored 12 points to lead Elk Grove (3-21, 1-9) while Jenny Banak and Rachel Kandefer had 6 apiece.

King had three 3-pointers for the Mustangs while Kyra Spiwak, Nallon and Hannah Ungurean each had one.

Campagna led the Mustangs on the boards with 10 rebounds while Katherine Nolan and Mickey each had seven.

Teammate Clare Preissing handed out 3 assists.

"I was proud of how our kids responded this week to a few tough losses," said Meadows coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "We received solid contributions from everyone on our roster."

Schaumburg 48, Conant 30: Junior forward Maya Bowens struck for a season-high 18 points to help lead the host Saxons in the MSL West contest.

Mallory Gerber added 9 points and Lexi Ross 8 as Schaumburg (16-9, 7-3), due to the tiebreaker, will play in the MSL second-place crossover against visiting Hersey on Tuesday.

Junior Jorie Wachal led Conant (9-15, 3-7) with 18 points.
