Bartlett runs past St. Charles North

Like a thoroughbred racehorse Bartlett paced itself for a while on Tuesday night before bolting to the finish line to claim a 57-40 boys basketball win over visiting St. Charles North.

The game was tied 28-28 early in the third quarter before the Hawks took over and outscored the North Stars 29-12 over the final 13-plus minutes.

The Hawks went on a 10-0 run in the third quarter to open up a 38-28 advantage. The Hawks made 8 of 13 shots from the field in the second half.

"I just thought we did a really good job of being patient in the second half and finding the open man," Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith said. "It started by not settling for as many of those 3-pointers that we took in the first half. We did a real good job of working it into the post and then going outside when we needed to."

Tyler Pauletti was the Hawks' go-to guy in the third when he scored 10 of his game-high 16 points, including a couple 3-pointers. He also had a pair of 3-pointers in the first half.

"Tyler had a great all-around game both on offense and defense," Wolfsmith said. "Everyone expects Robby (Jimenez) to be able to put up 20-something points every night, but they were doing a good job on him. That's when we need other guys to step up and Tyler is one of those guys we turn to and he came through for us tonight.'

The Hawks (14-10) also really clamped down on the defensive end. After making their first 2 shots of the second half the North Stars managed to shoot just 4-of-23 (17 percent) from the field the rest of the way.

The Hawks also turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter with steals on 3 straight North possessions, including one that ended in a breakaway slam dunk by Brett Awalt.

"Defensively in that third quarter we started controlling their drives and stopping the kickouts for 3-pointers," Wolfsmith said. "Once we got settled in with that the fourth we started jumping into passing lanes and creating turnovers."

Jimenez and Ben Reyes each converted on 6-of-6 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to help the Hawks seal the deal. Jiminez finished with 15 points and Reyes had 11.

The North Stars (3-13) were led in scoring by Jarod Karom, who had 12 points on four 3-pointers.

"We just had too many breakdowns in our man-to-man defense in the second half," St. Charles North coach Tom Poulin said. "That's a little uncharacteristic for us. We had been playing a lot better defensively lately."
