Elgin's Baldwin earns Daily Herald MVP honor

Elgin senior Lavion Baldwin has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for his career-best scoring performance in a recent victory against St. Charles East in boys basketball.

Lavion Baldwin, Elgin: This senior enjoyed the best game of his three-year varsity career in a 77-72 overtime win over St. Charles East. The 6-foot-2 post scored a personal-best 32 points, including six 3-pointers. Baldwin scored 15 points during a fourth-quarter run that saw the Maroons erase a 14-point deficit. He sank his final 3-pointer in overtime to help Elgin improve to 15-7.

Freddie Clay, Willowbrook: Clay helped lead a week featuring three Willowbrook victories, including two in the West Suburban Gold. The 5-foot-11 junior guard scored 15 points in a 51-44 win over Hoffman Estates and 12 points in an 85-82 quadruple overtime win over Addison Trail. The next night Clay scored 20 in a 72-69 win over Hinsdale South. For the week he averaged 6 assists and 3 steals.

John Kerr, Grant: The former freshman B player continues to bring his "A" game. He scored 23 points to help the Bulldogs beat North Chicago 72-67 in overtime in a North Suburban Prairie Division first-place showdown. The 6-foot-5 junior forward followed up by scoring 9 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in a 49-45 loss to Vernon Hills.

Jorden Thornton, Hoffman Estates: The Hawks' senior guard was a difference-maker, coming up with a 9-for-14 shooting performance and a game-high 24 points in a 48-45 victory over Schaumburg in Mid-Suburban West play. Included in Thornton's effort was a 4-for-5 display from 3-point range.
