Krutwig breaks loose in 2nd half, Jacobs downs Huntley

It was certainly a tale of two halves for Jacobs junior center Cam Krutwig.

After going scoreless in the first half, Krutwig scored all 20 of his points during the final 16 minutes of the game to lead the Golden Eagles to a 52-44 win over visiting Huntley in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action in Algonquin Tuesday night.

Krutwig, who connected on 9-of-10 shots from the floor in the second half, also finished the game with 17 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 4 assists.

Senior guard Kyle Ross, who has been hampered by injury for most of the season, assisted on 7 of Krutwig's baskets.

"I had a terrible first half, but I tried to stay positive at halftime and come out in the second half and play better," said Krutwig. "I moved for the ball better and Kyle did a great job of getting me the ball in great position to score."

Jacobs coach Jim Roberts realized Krutwig would come up with a better effort in the second half.

"Cam played very poorly in the first half," said Roberts. ."He came out more aggressive in the second half and Kyle did a great job of getting Cam the ball. Having Kyle back is a big lift for this team. He is our most experienced guard and our second best player."

The Golden Eagles (17-4, 7-0) couldn't shake the pesky Red Raiders until the fourth quarter.

Jacobs grabbed its biggest advantage of the game at 46-35 with 3:45 remaining in the contest on a driving layup by Krutwig off a perfect bounce pass from Ross.

Huntley (7-16, 2-5) didn't quit and whittled the Jacobs lead to 48-44on a 15-footer by Jadrian Flores with 46 seconds remaining.

Those would be the last points the Red Raiders would score in the game.

Jacobs scored the final 4 points of the game on a layup from Nikolas Balkcom and 2 free throws from Ross.

Balkcom joined Krutwig in double digits with 11 points. Mathew Seng paced Huntley with 13 while Olare Oladipo scored 11.

"Jacobs made more of a concerted effort of getting Krutwig the ball in the second half," said Huntley coach Will Benson. "I was proud of our effort on him in the first half but he is a tough matchup for us. I like the way we kept fighting until the end of the game."
