Frazier is now Batavia's all-time leader
Hannah Frazier has converted her share of 3-point plays throughout her high school career at Batavia.
However, the 3-point play she made with 7:25 remaining in the second quarter of the Bulldogs' 65-58 girls basketball victory against Larkin Tuesday night carried with it an extra special meaning.
After receiving a pass from teammate Bethany Orman, Frazier turned and connected on a short jumper in the lane while drawing a foul from a Larkin defender.
With the basket, the 6-foot-2 senior center tied former teammate Liza Fruendt's career scoring record of 1,921 points.
A few seconds later, Frazier swished the record-breaking free throw for her 1,922nd point.
After a congratulatory hug from Bethany Orman (9 assists), Frazier received a standing ovation from the crowd as the announcement of the achievement was made public.
"It's an unbelievable feeling," said Frazier, who finished with a game-high 25 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots. "The fact that everyone was here to see me do it with my friends all cheering me on - it was really cool.
"I made that shot and then I was like, 'OK, I forgot about this free throw,' " added the St. Louis University recruit. "It would have been so embarrassing because they're all ready to celebrate. I'm glad it went in."
Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen knows that Frazier realizes the importance of the record.
"I think she feels good about it," said Jensen. "She has been very humble about it. We haven't talked about it much. She has just kept playing hard and hasn't used it as a distraction.
"It is kind of hard to believe that as dynamic as Liza (Fruendt) was that two years later her record is broken."
As for the game itself, the Bulldogs (21-5, 9-1) were hard-pressed much of the way by the Royals (8-18, 3-9), who suffered their sixth consecutive loss.
Batavia led 15-14 after one quarter before extending it to 35-25 with a 9-1 run that included one of four first-half 3-pointers by freshman guard Hailey Orman (18 points).
"Hailey had an outstanding game," said Jensen. "She wasn't as hot in the second half but man did she get things going for us."
Larkin, led by Sarah El Rahmany (18 points) and Marlee Kyles (16 points, 11 rebounds), trailed 40-35 at halftime and 56-47 after three quarters before staging a late rally.
Three-pointers from El Rahmany and Kyles pulled the Royals within 3 at 56-53 with 5:51 remaining but the Bulldogs responded with 6 straight points over the next 3 minutes to seal the decision.
"It's the first game all year that we played all four quarters competitively with a great team," said Larkin coach Steve Knapp. "The girls played their hearts out."
Freshman Geddy Rerko added 8 points and 7 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
