St. Edward's Spagnola nets Daily Herald MVP honors
St. Edward junior guard Madelyn Spagnola has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for her recent high school girls basketball performances.
Madelyn Spagnola, St. Edward: This 5-foot-3 junior guard scored a game-high 22 points and helped her team come back from a 20-point deficit in a 49-46 Metro Suburban West win at Wheaton Academy. Then, in front of a capacity crowd on Pack the Place night at St. Edward, she scored 23 points (17 in the first half) and made 3 free throws with no time left on the clock to lift the Green Wave to a 55-52 win over Hampshire, St. Edward's fourth straight win.
Kelly Katis, Barrington: The 5-foot-5 senior guard made a big impact in two MSL West wins over Schaumburg and Conant. Katis collected 12 points, 4 steals and 4 assists in a 49-42 win over Schaumburg, then came back with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 46-42 win at Conant. In both games, she had clutch steals in the final minute.
Mia Lakstigala, Naperville Central: The 5-foot-11 sophomore helped the Redhawks remain in the DuPage Valley Conference race with victories against Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley. Against Neuqua she 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, with 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Against Waubonsie Lakstigala scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, adding 6 rebounds.
Abby Pirron, Lake Zurich: The four-year varsity starting guard has displayed an improved jump shot this season. Note her performance in the Bears' 34-19 win over Mundelein, for example. She scored 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, while going 4 of 4 from the stripe. She also had 10 points in the Bears' 52-51 upset of Zion-Benton.
