Round Lake tops Waukegan

Miya Johnson and Griselda Martinez each scored 14 points, and Round Lake's girls basketball team pulled out a 53-48 win over visiting Waukegan in nonconference action Saturday afternoon.

Round Lake (4-17) also got offensive contributions from Alesia Jimdar (8 points), Hannah Brooks (7 points) and Tatyana Steadman (6 points).

"We played a complete game," Panthers coach Howard Conkling said. "Waukegan has a tough team."

Waukegan's Zyaire Strowder led all scorers with 26 points. Brie'elle Johnson added 18 for the Bulldogs.

Lakes 48, Wauconda 39 (OT): Ellie Haviland had 23 points and 7 rebounds, and the visiting Eagles needed overtime to prevail in the North Suburban Prairie contest.

Lakes (15-9, 7-1) led 13-2 after one quarter, 18-9 at halftime and 27-18 after three. But Wauconda (11-10, 3-6) outscored the Eagles 19-10 in the fourth to force OT.

"We slept through the first half - 14 turnovers, many of them unforced, and a miserable 20-percent shooting put us in a bad situation," Wauconda coach Jaime Dennis said. "We finally woke up in the second half and started playing with some intensity and determination. We fought our way back into the game with defense."

Mia Edwards added 9 points and 4 rebounds for Lakes, which also got key contributions from Natalie Iacopetti (8 points) and Izzy Quaranta (4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists).

"We started with great energy tonight," Eagles coach Brian Phelan said. "Our shots were not falling, but we picked it up on the defensive end. We played with great composure tonight as Wauconda made their run in the fourth quarter. (Friday), we ran our two-minute drill three times to help prepare for this conference dogfight. Great conference win over a very good Wauconda team."

Katie Rossetti had 16 points (two 3-pointers) and 9 rebounds for Wauconda, while Corrina Vaughan added 13 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals. The Bulldogs also received 8 points from Hayley Sutherland and 12 rebounds from Allie Tylka.

"Allie Tylka really sparked our defense in the second half, and Katie Rossetti carried the team in the fourth offensively," Dennis said. "Unfortunately, we just didn't have an answer for Haviland. She is good player and was the difference in the game. In overtime, they went 11 of 15 from the line and we couldn't get to the line at all. They never quit and the effort was there at the end. We have yet to put four solid quarters together."

Antioch 79, North Chicago 33: Ashley Reiser had 15 points, 8 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds for the Sequoits, who improved to 21-4 and 9-0 in the North Suburban Prairie.

Megan Kelly added 10 points and 4 steals for Antioch, which had 12 of 13 players score and every player pull down at least 2 rebounds. The Sequoits sank 10 3-pointers, including three by Alexis Duehr (9 points) and two by Kelly.

Grayslake Central 64, Woodstock 44: Lindsay Brust's game-high 15 points led a balanced attack, as the host Rams won their Fox Valley Fox game.

Amanda Larson and Ania Barnes added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Grayslake Central (11-11, 7-2). Kelly Moroney and Quin Garbett each had 8 points in the win.

Grayslake North 58, Woodstock North 46: The host Knights led 13-8 after one quarter, 23-19 at halftime and 40-33 after three.

Grayslake North improved to 14-9 and 6-3 in the Fox Valley Fox.
