Huntley shoots past Dundee-Crown to snap skid

All it took for Huntley was to knock down a few outside shots - and grab a few rebounds.

The Red Raiders nailed nine 3-pointers and had better than a 2-1 edge on the backboards while defeating Dundee-Crown, 55-37, in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action in Carpentersville Friday night.

Mathew Seng and Makomborero Tizora each had three 3-pointers and 13 points as Huntley (8-14, 2-3) snapped an 8-game losing streak.

"Dundee-Crown plays really good help-side defense and they really packed in the lane, so we knew that (the 3-point shot) was going to be there," said Huntley coach Will Benson. "The trick was were we going to have enough balance going inside and not just chuck up threes the entire night."

The Raiders broke the game open in a third quarter that saw them knock down 6 of 9 shots, including 4 from long range. They outscored the hosts 23-12 in that period to open a 47-29 lead.

The key to that big third quarter wasn't really all that complicated.

"We really played great defense, we communicated, rotated well, and just did a great job playing defense," said Tizora. "It was a team effort. We really got into it and just shut them down."

"We played as a team and it shows," said Spoeth. "I don't know what the score was, but we've got to build off of that and get ready for Cary next week."

Spoeth finished with 8 points for Huntley. Kyle Nwogu had 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. The Red Raiders outrebounded the Chargers 34-15.

Jack Omdahl led the way for D-C (1-15, 0-5) with 18 points. Nick Shydlowski added 6.

Neither team shot the ball well in a first half that saw Huntley take a 24-17 lead into the locker room. Huntley opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take control. Olalare Oladipo and Seng each hit a 3-pointer to get the run going.

"I thought Huntley did a great job to start the second half," said D-C coach Lance Huber. "They really took it right to us. They shot the ball great tonight."
