Two setbacks for Palatine at Lake Zurich

Palatine's boys basketball team dropped a pair of contests in the Martin Luther King, Jr. tournament hosted by Lake Zurich on Monday.

The Pirates started with a 53-40 loss to Niles North in a championship semifinal.

Palatine (14-8) actually led by 2 points after three quarters but was outscored 17-2 in the final period.

Niles North's Crishawn Cook was limited by foul trouble in the first half, but he scored 16 of his game-high 18 in the second half.

Charlie Van Dyke paced Palatine with 13 points, including three 3s, and Matt Ulrich had 8 points.

The Pirates came up short 55-50 against Richmond-Burton in their second game of the day.

Matt Mayer led Palatine with 12 points, followed by Johnny O'Shea (8) and Van Dyke (7).

Lake Zurich went on to top Niles North 61-58 in overtime in the tournament championship game.

Jovone Stricker of Palatine was among the all-tournament choices.

at Wheaton Warrenville South: Schaumburg split a pair of games in tournament play at Wheaton Warrenville South, dropping a 72-66 double overtime decision to Plainfield South and gaining a 68-56 victory against Huntley.

In the overtime game, Kameron Powell scored a game-high 26 points and was joined in double-figure scoring by Aaron Kline (19 points, including four 3s) and Hezekiah Trotter (13).

Against Huntley, the same trio led the way in scoring as Powell had 14 points with Kline getting 13 and Trotter 11 for Schaumburg (5-15).
