Warren hits shots, defeats Glenbard East

Warren's Maurice Chambers and Jayson Dorsey were in the flow even before Monday's opening tip.

“It all started with a good warm-up,” Chambers said. “Everybody was feeling good, hitting shots, especially me and Jayson. So when we got in the game we just let it all go.”

Chambers, Dorsey and Branden Ellis combined to make 6 of 11 3-point shots in the first quarter against Glenbard East, which translated to a 62-49 Blue Devils win for the consolation title at Wheaton Warrenville South's fourth Martin Luther King boys basketball tournament.

“It's not always the plan, but it turned out to be the plan,” Dorsey said of a 3-point assault that had Warren (7-11) leading the Rams 22-5 after one quarter.

“We were both hitting them this whole tournament, so we just kept to that and luckily it went on throughout every game,” said Dorsey, who matched Chambers with a game-high 16 points. Dorsey hit four 3s for the game while Chambers notched 3 and went 6 for 8 from the floor.

Like a football coach faced with third-and-28, there wasn't much Glenbard East (11-8) could do but play hard and try to get back into the game the next 24 minutes.

“We've been in that situation before,” said Glenbard East coach Scott Miller.

Terrence Lakes helped the Rams match Warren in the second quarter, trailing 32-19 at halftime, but Juwan Perry led Warren to 7-of-12 third-quarter shooting to bump the margin to 47-29 entering the fourth.

“Start of the third quarter, just play with a little more energy, not let them get comfortable with their shot,” Miller said. “We just weren't able to do that. They shot the ball very well, but I felt like we gave them too much space for some of those shots.”

Despite trailing 57-31 on a Dorsey 3 with 5:09 left to play Glenbard East hustled as if it were a one-possession game, Kenny Adams converting a steal and Jack Grigat netting two straight 3s.

“It was a nice tournament,” said Lakes, who scored 12 points to 10 for Mike Finley. “We really wanted to see where were at against some good teams. We played hard, it was a nice weekend for us.”

Obviously, for Warren as well.

“I've been thinking we've been getting ready to turn the corner for a while, where we can put things together, have a good quarter like that and then just keep things going,” said Blue Devils coach Jon Jasnoch.

“We had that happen Saturday night, this morning, today, so we've got three in a row here where we were able to do that. I feel pretty good about the weekend.”
