Jacobs finally puts away Dundee-Crown

Jacobs boys basketball coach Jim Roberts believed District 300 rival Dundee-Crown is better than its record would indicate.

Roberts was right.

In a closely contested game for 3 quarters, the Golden Eagles were finally able to seize control of the game in the fourth quarter in posting a 48-34 win in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Algonquin Friday night.

"D-C doesn't have a very good record but they have some very talented young players," said Roberts. "They are very well coached and pushed us hard for four quarters. We had a good spurt at the end and we were able to get the win."

Holding a 33-25 lead after 3 quarters, the Golden Eagles (13-3, 4-0) scored the first 9 points of the fourth quarter to extend their advantage to 42-25 with 4:55 left in the game.

Ryan Phillips connected on a driving layup in the lane and canned a long 3-pointer from deep in the left corner for 5 points during the pivotal 9-0 surge.

The Chargers' (1-13, 0-4) first points of the quarter came on a 3-pointer from Jack Orndahl with 2:58 left in the game to make the score 42-28.

Nikolas Balkcom canned 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute and 30 seconds to seal the win for the Eagles.

Phillips and Cam Krutwig (9 rebounds, 4 blocked shots, 3 assists) paced the Golden Eagles with 12 points apiece.

"We played with much more enthusiasm in the second half," said Phillips. "We got Cam more touches in the second half and he always dishes the ball out to the open shooter. I was able to make some shots and help us win. This was my first varsity game against D-C so I was a little nervous. They don't have a great record but they played tough."

Tim Randl added 8 points for the Golden Eagles.

Orndahl, with four 3-pointers, scored 18 to lead the Chargers. Sophomore center Gabriel Bergeron added 10 points along with 9 rebounds.

The Chargers were hindered by 22 turnovers.

"We throw the ball to the other team way too often," said Dundee-Crown coach Lance Huber. "We had way too many unforced turnovers tonight. We competed well but now we need to play to our skill level. If we can do that we can start picking up some victories."
