Montini's Kerstein nets MVP honor

Montini senior guard Lea Kerstein has earned Daily Herald MVP honors for her recent girls basketball performances.

Lea Kerstein, Montini: The senior guard led the Broncos to the championship of the Montini Christmas Tournament, the toughest holiday tourney in the state, and was named first-team all-tournament. Kerstein, an Alabama-Birmingham recruit, had 10 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds in the title game victory against powerhouse Whitney Young. In the semifinal win over Hersey, she made 6 of her 11 3-point attempts to finish with 18 points, adding 3 steals. Kerstein scored 19 vs. Batavia in the quarterfinals with 4 steals.

Myia Clark, St. Viator: The 5-foot-7 sophomore guard was named the Most Valuable Player of the Blenner Holiday Classic at St. Viator, helping the Lions to a 3-1 record and tourney title. Clark averaged 15 points in the four games, including a 23-point game against Leyden and a 20-pointer vs. Harvest Christian.

Camri Conley, Kaneland: The senior guard led the Knights to the championship of the Ottawa Christmas Classic, improving Kaneland to 11-1 and giving the Knights Thanksgiving and Christmas titles. Conley, the tournament MVP, scored 12 points and had 5 rebounds in a 42-33 championship win over Yorkville after coming up with a game-turning steal and layup and scoring 13 points in a 59-57 win over Lincoln-Way West in the semifinals.

Kelly Johnson, Antioch: With star Amy Reiser missing 3 of 4 tournament games in Lisle, the Sequoits needed another player to raise her game. The senior forward did just that. She scored 11 of her season-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to help rally the Sequoits to a title-clinching, 65-56 win over Illiana Christian. She also grabbed 9 rebounds.
