Rockford Boylan downs South Elgin

In the blink of an eye the complexion and tone of Tuesday's boys basketball matchup between Rockford Boylan and South Elgin changed dramatically.

With the score tied at 33 midway through the third quarter, Boylan seized control of the contest by scoring the final 10 points of the quarter to take a 43-33 advantage heading into the fourth period.

That pivotal spurt propelled the Titans to a 59-44 victory over the Storm in third round action of the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs High School in Algonquin.

"We simply need to play better basketball down the stretch," said South Elgin coach Jim Cook. "We play a lot of guys and never could find the right combination tonight. We need to take care of the basketball better. We need to play better in the last two games of the tournament to get momentum once the conference season starts back up in January."

A putback by South Elgin's Tyler Hankins tied the game at 33-33. Led by 6 points from Sam Fehrle and baskets by Hunter Decman and Zach Couper Boylan (9-0) made its final 5 shots of the quarter and took a double-digit lead into the fourth quarter.

The Titans' biggest advantage of the night was 16, 55-39, after a spinning layup in the lane from Anthony Foreman with 2:26 left in the contest.

"South Elgin did a great job of taking us out of our game," said Boylan coach Mike Winters. "We like to run five players in and out the whole game and run and gun for 32 minutes. We think we can wear teams down with our depth. We have scored 50 points in a half in a game this year. We had to change our tempo and this game showed the talent we have on this team. We showed we can win in different ways. We have things we can work on but this was a good win against a good team."

South Elgin (6-7), which connected on only 5-of-20 shots for percent in the second half, was led by Anthony Lynch with 9 points while Logan Atkins added 7 for the Storm.

The Titans, who went 3-0 in pool play, were led in scoring by Fehrle with 13 points. Foreman scored 12 and Couper added 11 with 8 rebounds.
