Dundee-Crown wins twice in tournament

Even after a win and after playing 3 games in less than 24 hours, Dundee-Crown girls basketball coach Sarah Miller's displeasure was evident.

With no baskets and only 4 points in the fourth quarter, the Chargers were able to produce enough of an effort to post a 40-30 win over North Chicago in action at the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic at Woodstock High School Saturday afternoon.

"We practiced hard enough for tournaments like this," said Miller, whose team will play Crystal Lake South at 11 a.m. Monday in the second-place crossover game at Richmond-Burton.

"We played three games in less than 24 hours and two games today but there is no excuse for playing with absolute no intensity for four quarters. No discredit to North Chicago because they played extremely hard, but this was ugly from the start. We have to handle adversity and do the little things better."

D-C (6-8), which never trailed in the game, scored the first 6 points of the game on 2 baskets from Melissa Barker and a putback by Maddie Tripp.

The Chargers, who connected on only 12-of-50 shots from the field for 24 percent and 3-of-15 from 3-point range for 20 percent, held their biggest advantage of the game at 36-20 after a layup by Allison Michalski with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Warhawks climbed to within 9 of the Chargers, 37-28, after a putback by Alexis Means with 1:33 left in the game.

North Chicago couldn't get any closer.

Michalski paced the Chargers with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists while Barker scored 10 with a pair of treys.

"Coach was not happy with our intensity," said Barker. "We can learn from this game and work harder in practice. We have some very tough games coming up and we have to play better."

Alyssa Bouie, before fouling out with 1:22 left in the game, paced the Warhawks with 15 points.

Dundee-Crown 52, Woodstock 43: Outscoring the hosts 27-16 in the second and third quarters, the Chargers were able to open the day with a 9-point win.

"It was a good bounce-back win after a tough loss to Johnsburg (Friday night)," said Miller. "We had a team meeting at the school at 6:20 (a.m.) and regrouped. It was a good effort by our team."

Paige Gieseke led the Chargers with 14 points.

"Coach Miller has really helped me with my shooting," said Gieseke. "I am shooting with more confidence."

Kennedy White and Tripp scored 10 points each for D-C while Gabriella Scollo paced Woodstock with 12.
