Phillips tops Wheeling

Wheeling's girls basketball team dropped a 49-35 decision to Phillips in the first round of the Blue Devil Classic at Warren High School on Saturday.

Courtney Williams scored a game-high 19 points to lead Wildcats of Chicago, who improved to 6-6.

The Wildcats of Wheeling led 14-12 after one quarter but were outscored 15-4 in the second period and 10-3 in the third.

The Wildcats (3-10) were led in scoring by Shannon Kennedy (9 points), Nansy Velev (6 points, 4 rebounds 2 assists, 1 steal), Coco Yoshino (5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal) and Melissa Claver (5 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists).

Nosa Igiehon grabbed 7 rebounds with 4 points while Michaela Vasey had 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.

Wheeling returns to action in the tourney on Monday when it faces Lake Forest at noon.
