Hot-shooting Hampshire dumps Crystal Lake Central

Hampshire came out on fire, scoring both inside and outside. And the Whip-Purs never really cooled off until the game was well in hand, cruising to a 75-51 boys basketball victory against Crystal Lake Central Saturday night.

Deion Garcia and Luke Tuttle had 18 points apiece while Danny Duchaj added 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks for the Whip-Purs in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division action in Hampshire.

Garcia scored the game's first 8 points. Then Duchaj took over, scoring the next 8 in a row for Hampshire. When Garcia connected on another 3-pointer, Hampshire led 19-10 less than 5 minutes in.

Garcia, with five 3-pointers, led the Whips' outside game, but the ability to score inside was the key to Hampshire's offensive explosion.

"Ultimately, it's being able to get it inside now, which we weren't able to do before, which has kind of opened up the outside shot for us," said Hampshire coach Ben Whitehouse. "Then when they collapsed, we were able to kick it out."

Duchaj and Tuttle carried the load on the inside, although Tuttle also contributed a pair of 3-pointers. The Whips shot 50 percent (11-of-22) from long range for the game.

With Garcia and Duchaj combining for 23 points, Hampshire led 25-17 after 1 quarter. The Whips then broke the game wide open in the second, outscoring the Tigers 26-9 to lead 51-26 at the half. With Garcia and Duchaj getting some rest Tuttle took over, scoring 13 points in the second quarter. Five different Whip-Purs hit 3-pointers during that period.

Tuttle added 8 rebounds and 3 assists for Hampshire (2-6, 1-2). Billy Dumoulin added 7 points and 6 rebounds, and Nathan Cork had 6 points for the Whips.

Adam Pump almost single-handedly kept the visitors in the game, hitting five 3-pointers on the way to 17 points. He made 3 from long-range in the first quarter alone, including a 75-footer at the buzzer. Adam Wittenberg added 10 points for the Tigers.

Hampshire outrebounded the Tigers 27-20 and forced 21 turnovers.
