Westminster Christian falls to Indian Creek

Apparently, not much has changed since the summer when it comes to Westminster Christian figuring out Indian Creek's boys basketball team.

The two teams met several times in summer league play with the Warriors only coming away with one win. Indian Creek continued its dominance on Saturday night with a 50-33 win over host Westminster in the championship game of the Warrior Thanksgiving Basketball Classic.

The Indian Creek defense was stifling as it held Westminster to just 13 of 45 (29 percent) shooting from the field.

"We wanted to attack the basket more, but when we drove inside they did a great job of stopping us," Westminster coach Andy Zielinski said. "They are a very good defensive team, but at least in the summer we were able to get the ball inside. Tonight they just pushed us away from the basket and we didn't shoot very well."

The Warriors trailed just 12-11 late in the first quarter before the Timberwolves started pulling away with an 8-0 run to extend the margin to 20-11 early in the second quarter. Indian Creek point guard Trevor Guerra had a 3-pointer to end the first quarter and another one to start the second quarter. He had a game-high 17 points.

The deficit for the Warriors was 31-17 by halftime. Westminster couldn't get closer than that the rest of the way. Indian Creek shot 17 of 33 (52 percent) from the field.

"They are a very efficient team," Zielinski said. "They share the ball and run their sets very well. Today we just clearly got beat by the better team."

Considering this was supposed to be a rebuilding season for the Warriors they still came away from the tournament with a 3-1 record and a second-place finish. There were plenty of bright spots, including the play of senior Dillon Rejman and sophomore Ben Versluys, who both made the all-tournament team. Versluys had a team-high 17 points on Saturday.

"It was a very good tournament for us," Zielinski said. "There's not more I can say about how well Dillon has played and Ben really stepped it up. As a sophomore he really showed that he belongs up at this level."
