Coach John Bongiorno said he was most pleased with the defensive gains his group made after yielding 80 points in a loss to Libertyville on Wednesday. One key to the improvement was the play of Johnson, a senior who drew a pair of early chargers against Prosser.

"He's athletic, he hustles and he's a steadying force for our guys," Bongiorno said. "Anybody takes two charges - as a coach, you've got to love that."

All of which was helpful in limiting Prosser's Darnell Latham to 14 points. He'd poured in 35 against Libertyville earlier in the tournament.

Maine West wraps up its tournament Saturday against Maine South. In that contest, the challenge will be of a different nature.

"They'll play their matchup zone," explained Bongiorno. "It's tough to prepare for because no matter what you do in practice, you really can't simulate how we'll they'll play it in a game."

Starting times for Saturday games have changed slightly from the original schedule to allow Libertyville's players to attend the football team's attempt at a Class 7A championsip at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb. Libertyville will face Chicago Math and Science Charter at 12:15 p.m., with Maine West and Maine South tipping off at 2 p.m.

North Lawndale 64, Lake Zurich 54: Win or lose, good teams always look for ways to improve.

Such as Lake Zurich, which took the short end of a 64-54 decision to Chicago's North Lawndale College Prep in the Grant Thanksgiving tournament on Friday evening. But the Bears took away plenty of positives.

"I guess we're not going undefeated this year," Lake Zurich coach Billy Pitcher said with a grin. "But I was really pleased with our effort tonight. North Lawndale is a high quality team. They made shots we had trouble defending, and they hit the offensive boards."
