South Elgin earns first win for Cook

Matty Smith and Tyler Hankins each scored 14 points Wednesday to lead South Elgin's boys basketball team to a 66-31 win over Rockford Guilford at the District 205 Tip-Off Tournament in Rockford, giving first-year Storm coach Jim Cook his first win.

Quinton McClundon added 8 points for South Elgin (1-1), which opened up a 38-16 halftime lead it never looked back from.

Newark 75, Hampshire 69: The Whip-Purs (0-2) had four players in double figures but couldn't come away with a win at the Strombom Tournament in Sycamore. Deion Garcia led the way for Hampshire with 18 points, while Brennan Woods had 16, Danny Duchaj 15 and Luke Tuttle 14.

St. Edward 61, Alden-Hebron 40: At the Westminster Christian tournament, Andrew O'Neill scored 20 points and Kevin Cortez-Harvey added 13 as the Green Wave moved to 2-0 for the season.

Kaneland 68, Batavia 58: The Knights moved to 3-0 at Batavia's Ken Peddy Windmill Classic by beating the hosts. The Knights led throughout, up 17-5 after one quarter, 31-21 at halftime and 52-34 after three. Ryan David scored 23 points, Dylan Vaca had 13 and Mitchel Groen 12 for Kaneland. Batavia fell to 0-2.

Buffalo Grove 71, Marmion 57: Marmion battled but couldn't overcome 55 percent shooting from the floor by host Buffalo Grove Wednesday night at the Bison Classic. Jack Vaselaney had 20 points for BG (1-1), 16 in the second half on 6 of 8 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Sophomore center Mick Sullivan had 11 points for the Cadets, but only 4 after the first quarter, as BG's Joey Pinakidis (15) and Hans Haller (10) began to assert themselves around the basket. Marmion had a 33-32 lead after Sullivan scored in the third on a feed from Jon Young, but BG finished the quarter on a 21-8 run from there, keyed by Vaselaney and Mac Camardo off the bench. Marmion plays again Saturday against tournament leader Grayslake Central on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Woodstock 57, Cary-Grove 53: Adam Loch had 10 points while Zach Beagureau, Quinn Celske and Daniel Schmidt added 9 each for Cary-Grove (1-2) at the Hoops for Healing Tournament in Woodstock.
