Vernon Hills finishes with tournament win
Freshman guard Dakiya Daniels had 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals, as Vernon Hills' girls basketball team wrapped up its own tournament with a 49-32 win over Lake Forest on Tuesday night.
Lake Forest Academy, which followed up its win over Vernon Hills on Monday by beating Glenbrook North 36-29, won the tourney with a 5-0 record. Vernon Hills finished 4-1.
Against Lake Forest, the Cougars also got contributions from Becky Bahlmann (9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals), Sophia Lehocky (8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) and Dana Meline (7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals).
Stevenson 43, Wheaton-Warrenville South 20: At Schaumburg, Kiana Cencula scored 14 points to lead the Patriots (2-2).
Jessica Burke added 10 for Stevenson, and Ashley Richardson tallied seven.
Libertyville 46, Mother McAuley 40: At Hersey, Claire Keefe poured in 21 points, and the Wildcats won for the first time this season.
Caroline Frea added 14 points for Libertyville (1-2, 1-2 Buffalo Grove tournament).
Deerfield 58, Lakes 44: At Lake Zurich, Ellie Haviland had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals for the Eagles in their tournament loss.
Natalie Iacopetti contributed 11 points, 3 rebounds and 4 steals for Lakes, while Julia Deferville added 8 points and 4 rebounds.
The Eagles led 12-8 after one quarter and 25-22 at halftime before being outscored 19-11 in the third.
"Deerfield made a great third-quarter run hitting a number of three balls," Lakes coach Brian Phelan said. "We need to continue to work hard and improve. It's a young season with a young team. We plan to continue to improve each day."
Hersey 70, Grayslake Central 25: At Hersey, Quin Garbett had 10 points for the Rams in their tournament loss.
Wauconda 52, Richmond-Burton 26: On Monday night, the host Bulldogs captured the championship of their inaugural Thanksgiving tournament, as Corrina Vaughan had 16 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Wauconda went 3-0, placing Vaughan and Katie Rossetti on the all-tourney team.
After what coach Jaime Dennis called a slow start by her team against Richmond-Burton, the Bulldogs made some halftime adjustments and came out strong in the third quarter to outscore the Rockets 17-2 and put the game out of reach.
Wauconda had nine players score, with freshman Allie Tylka adding 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Rossetti finished with 7 points and 4 steals, and Mallory Carver had 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
"Good passing and aggressive defense were keys to the game," Dennis said.
