Huntley wakes up, rolls by Streamwood

Whatever Huntley girls basketball coach Steve Raethz said at halftime, the Red Raiders heeded his words of wisdom.

Irritated by a lackluster second quarter which produced only 7 points, Huntley scored the first 12 points of the third quarter and outscored Streamwood 33-5. The result was a Red Raider 70-26 victory over the Sabres in action at the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament held at Crystal Lake South High School Friday night.

"I told our team at halftime we were sluggish at both ends of the court in the second quarter and needed to be more consistent," said Raethz. "We really amped up the defense in the third quarter and got some transition points off of it. We played very well and like we are capable of."

The Red Raiders (2-0) made their first 5 shots of the second half during their 12-0 surge.

Paige Renkosik and Ali Andrews tallied 6 points apiece as Huntley turned a 27-14 lead into a 39-14 advantage with 5:52 remaining in the third quarter.

"At halftime coach told us we had to play harder and with more consistency at both ends," said Andrews. "We came out in the third quarter and played like we are capable of."

Huntley held a commanding 60-19 advantage after 3 quarters of play.

"We knew they would come out and press us hard in the third quarter," said Streamwood coach George Rosner. "We were one pass away on a lot of possessions of breaking the press. They commit to playing great defense and they feed off of that. They have two super players and three very good players. Huntley is a very talented team."

In 3 quarters of play, Andrews paced the Red Raiders with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.

Connecting on 7-of-10 shots from the field, Renkosik backed up Andrews with 14 points. Morgan Clausen tallied 10 and Alexsis Lowitzki came off the bench to score 7.

Substitute Madeline Moffett also tallied 5 points for Huntley.

"I like the way the kids off the bench have played so far," said Raethz. "We certainly have a lot of quality depth on this team."

Streamwood was paced by Jenejha Williams with 7 points and 10 rebounds while Andrea Bracy added 6 points for the Sabres.
