Wachal goes for 40 as Conant tops Oswego

Conant junior guard Jorie Wachal scored a career-high 40 points as the Cougars topped Oswego 58-46 on Thursday at York's girls basketball touranment in Elmhurst.

Wachal's big night included five 3-pointers and 11 of 14 free throws as Conant improved to 1-2 in the six-team event that concludes on Saturday.

Christie Dizono and Karli Heneghan each chipped in 5 points for Conant.

Hersey 62, Mother McAuley 43: Junior Claire Gritt had a game-high 20 points and 8 steals as Hersey opened its season at home in the Bison Classic.

Junior Gina Miklasz added 8 points for the Huskies while classmate Kelly Weyhrich had 7 points with 8 steals.

Schaumburg 40, Stevenson 26: Schaumburg improved to 2-0 in its own tournament as Mallory Gerber (13 points), Laura O'Connell (11) and Maya Bowens (11) led the way.

Maine West 57, Lake Park 43: Freshman Rachel Kent scored a game-high 24 points with 8 rebounds and 3 assists as the Warriors improved to 3-0 in the Hoffman Estates Thanksgiving Tournament.

She scored 26 and 24 points in the Warriors first two games.

“Rachel's been doing a great job,” said Maine West coach Derril Kipp. “Lake Park is a scrappy team. They played a box-and-one on Rachel but she fought through some traffic and scored.”

Catherine Johnson added 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists while Kayla Pociejewski added 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

“We did a good job with our press-breaker,” Kipp added. “They shoot a lot of 3-pointers. We had to play good defense on them.

“Kayla (Pociejewski) had her best all-around game so far. And Eliza Palarz playing defense and getting rebounds. Catherine (Johnson) did a nice job handling their pressure.”

Hoffman Estates 50, Christ The King 34: Monraia Wilson scored a season-high 18 points and Jenny Nailor added 12 as Hoffman evened it record to 1-1 in its own tournament.

Mynk Richardson-Clerk added 8 points and Tayler Williams 6 for the Hawks.

Rich East 65, Buffalo Grove 57: Senior guard Maddie Welter scored a team-high 25 for BG, which dropped the first game of their own Bison Classic.

Backcourt partner and classmate Sammy Stejskal added 8 points.

Tayana Wilson (27 points) and Carmari Lloyd (19) led Rich East.

Downers Grove South 54, Prospect 48: Sophomore Emily Frasco (11 points) and senior Angela Roman (10) led the Knights (2-1) in their first loss at York's tournament.

Leyden 61, Fenton 25: Artasia Gusman scored 12 points to lead Leyden to victory in the first game of the Fenton tournament in Bensenville.

Yaneli Dorado added 9 points while Rebecca Miranda and Gianna Grande each had 6 for the Eagles.
