Phelan returns to head coaching role at Lakes

As the numbers at home kept rising, the math became apparent for the math teacher.

In 2010, as a daddy of three children under the age of 6, Brian Phelan resigned as Lakes' boys basketball coach.

Five seasons later, he's back - as Lakes' girls basketball coach.

Lakes' school board approved his hiring Tuesday night. Phelan was the Eagles' boys basketball coach the first five years the school was open. He replaces Pete Schneider, who resigned after last season.

"Brian has been wanting to get back into the coaching ranks, and he shared that this is the perfect fit at the perfect time," Lakes athletic director Troy Parola said. "Coach Phelan shared that he has become a better father, (AP) math teacher and family man in his time away from the game."

Phelan and his wife, Tricia, now have four children. Phelan has been the Union President at Lakes and the Math Team head coach. He took the LCHS Math team to state last weekend.

"Coach Phelan shared that by taking the time away to experience different areas of life that his perspective on things has changed," Parola said. "With his wife all giving him the blessing to apply, he knew that this was the right time and right place to get back into the game."

Phelan was a girls basketball coach at McHenry High School before coming to Lakes when it opened its doors in 2004.
