Dineen out as Stevenson girls basketball coach

Stevenson will not bring back Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Famer Tom Dineen as its girls basketball coach.

Dineen was informed by athletic director Trish Betthauser Tuesday morning that the school would not be renewing his contract.

Both Dineen and Betthauser declined to comment.

Stevenson went 26-5 this season, winning the North Suburban Conference Lake Division with a 12-0 record before losing to Antioch in the NSC championship game. The Patriots advanced to the Class 4A Carmel Catholic regional final, where they lost to Dineen's former school, Buffalo Grove, 59-55 on Feb. 20.

Dineen won 20 games in each of his six seasons at Stevenson, taking over a varsity team that was coming off three losing seasons in a row under Betthauser. He finished with a 132-48 mark, winning two regional championships at Stevenson. In 29 seasons at Buffalo Grove, Dineen went 678-229. The Bison won the Class AA state championship in the 1999-2000 season.

Dineen has a career record of 810-277. On Jan. 17, Stevenson defeated host DeKalb 67-28 for his 800th career win.

Stevenson four-year varsity player Taylor Buford missed the NSC championship game due to an academic issue. Dineen did not start her in the Patriots' next game, their regional opener against Mundelein. Stevenson won by 2 points after beating Mundelein by 44 and 19 points during the regular season.
