Glenbard East looks to bright future after defeat

Its roster full of juniors and a sophomore starter, Glenbard East has a bright future.

It'll be next season, though. In Tuesday's Class 4A Proviso West regional quarterfinal the host Panthers won 49-48 on a Darius Jones free throw with 7.2 seconds left in overtime.

"It wasn't our best game but in the playoffs ugly game, pretty game, I don't care as long as we win," said Proviso West first-year coach and 1985 graduate Mark Ingram. No. 15 seed Proviso West (12-13) goes against top seeded Lyons Twp. at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

After Jones went 1 for 2 from the line Rams coach Scott Miller took timeout to design a play. Forward Patrick Peterkin inbounded the ball to point guard Terrance Lakes, who dribbled down and got the ball back to the 6-foot-6 Peterkin, whose hot left hand scored a game-high 22 points.

Peterkin's 3-point try bounced off to the left, where in a maze of arms and bodies Glenbard East's Jack Grigat had a difficult chance at a putback, but no-go.

"It was mayhem," Grigat said. "He just told us to crash the glass. We went to the glass. They boxed out all night, we couldn't get many offensive rebounds. That's that."

No. 17 seed Glenbard East (13-16) forced the Panthers into 17 turnovers but also turned the ball over 10 times. Two crucial ones at the end of the second quarter aided Proviso West's closing 10-0 run and 24-17 halftime lead. The Rams also made just 6 of 16 free throws.

"I feel like the regionals are kind of a microcosm of your season, and that's the way we played. You know, peaks and valleys," Miller said.

"We felt like we just gave them too much in the first and second quarter, the end of those quarters we had turnovers where we gave the ball back. You can't do that. It's momentum changers, it's free points."

As far as the peaks, Miller enjoyed the rally from a 27-17 third quarter deficit with a 13-0 run in which, Mike Finley, Peterkin, Zach Walsh, Grigat and Lakes - a sophomore and four juniors - all scored.

"I'm proud of our guys, they don't quit," said Miller, who graduates forward Bryce Roberts, Justin Gilford, Chase Biegalski and Adam Eboli.

Down 33-29 after three quarters, Proviso West led 42-40 on Kendall Mack's free throw with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter. The Rams forced overtime when Peterkin passed to 12-point scorer Finley for an acrobatic lay-in with 1:32 left. Proviso West used clock but didn't get a shot off as regulation time expired.

"We should be better off next year than we were this year," Peterkin said. "We still have a lot of juniors coming back so we've just got to work in the summer. We could be two times better."
